Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. George Bernard Shaw
They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Andy Warhol
How many people want some form of change in their lives ?
Probably everyone if they are being honest.
Why do the days blur, into months and years ?
Because we become ingrained in our habits.
We are on a kind of cognitive auto pilot of repetition and unconscious actions.
There is a Russian saying which goes like this.
“Its not how many days you live, its how many days you remember”.
A routine linked lifestyle leads to boredom.
But sadly now days, many of us expect to be bored in our lives.
Yet, why do people claim to want to change their life and goals yet the majority don’t actually end up changing anything ?
Is it possible that being bored could be bad for your health, if you are bored with life itself ?
And the scary answer to this rhetorical question is YES.
“We also found that those with a great deal of boredom were more likely to die during follow-up than those not bored at all…We conclude that those who report being bored are more likely to die younger than those who are not bored. However, the state of boredom is almost certainly a proxy for other risk factors”.source
We must strive for memorable experiences, if we are to overcome our lack of success in life itself, which segues of course to our short and long term business and financial successes.
By opening ourselves up to these “different” experiences and outcomes we get the benefits of added experiences to life.
Where financial profit is to monetary gain, experiences that are memorable lead to what has been called “life profit”.
Life profit is translated as the value of a memorable experience.
We must strive to get into the habit,of breaking routine.
The key to living a memorable life, is the active pursuit of living a memorable life.
Now without sounding too far out, how much “life profit” have we generated for our customers or employee`s or even the community because isn’t that what our own “brand`s” true purpose ultimately is ?
To enrich everyday peoples lives !
A real life example comes to mind.
A possible future customer rings up a company called Zappos and makes an enquiry about their shoes.
And the salesman on the phone, does not push their product but instead signs the “possible future customer” into a mud run near his house.
How amazing is that a companies staff, directed a person, to another activity, to have a memorable life experience.
This is infinitely more valuable than any form of tv commercial or social media post or banner ad.
Now the benefits are profound in this example.
The company has received great publicity for this act of seemingly odd but relevant advice.
It has gained a loyal customer who was not pushed into buying some shoes or product they did not need.
The company has gained more customers and sales and a greater profit.
All, by enhancing another human beings life.
It is truly a win win for everyone.
This came about because the company was willing to change its training and the way their staff integrates with customers.
Its a breaking down of tradition and causing changes that have an ongoing ripple effect.
The bottom line is, unconsciously we all believe that longevity = goodness. There are, admittedly, plenty of instances where this is perfectly rational. When a particular product or way of doing things has stood the test of time, it is probably superior to alternatives in at least some respects.
The problem is that longevity and tradition aren’t always accurate predictors of goodness — inertia, habit, marketing prowess, market monopoly and fear of change can all be the real reasons why we haven’t tried something new.
Why do people resist change ?
1/Loss of control.Change interferes with our autonomy and can make some people feel that they’ve lost control over their life or area of expertise.
2/Excess uncertainty.Change can feel like walking off a cliff blindfolded. The fear of the unknown and its consequences can hold people back.
3/Everything seems different. Change is meant to bring something different, but how different can people handle without some form of cognitive distress ?
4/Loss of face.By definition, change is a departure from the past and leads to the worry of failing in front of other people.
5/Concerns about a display of a lack of competence. Can I do it ? Change is resisted when it makes people feel stupid.
6/More work involved. Here is a universal challenge.Change in your life does indeed require more work. Its easier to be lazy
7/Ripple effects into other areas of our lives. The ripples might disrupt other parts of our “safe life.
8/Sometimes the threat is real. Now we get to true pain and politics. Change is resisted because it can hurt us.
But not changing, can hurt us more.
Especially if we are not happy and not achieving the goals we set in our life !
If we hold on to our lives that are making us unhappy, then we can never move forward.
