Motivation and Confidence

“Control Your Own Destiny or Someone Else Will”

Middle French confidence or directly from Latin confidentia, from confidentem (nominative confidens) “firmly trusting, bold,”

Now the word is often defined as something like a strong certainty in an action or a certainty in oneself.
But the underlying paradox is, we all have met people who appear confident even though their previous actions have led to catastrophe.
So where did their projected confidence come from if its not based on historical successes ?

And in business we all have met people whose presentation of confidence has dangerously spilled over into egotistical displays of arrogance.
Or, people that are not very bright, have idea`s that are not even wrong (wolfgang Pauli joke)  yet still project confidence in their actions and thoughts..!

And don’t forget the saying “if you have confidence you can achieve anything“.
Possibly…without confidence its hard to achieve anything since you need some form of motivation and self belief to do many things slightly out of the box.

So we must move on past a slightly new age nuance of the word confidence and look for more practical examples.
We believe that true confidence in action as well as self confidence, is based around practical plans that have realistic long term goals involved.

And when you look at many successful people now days, the two stand out traits are self confidence in themselves as well as motivation.

One goes hand in hand with the other.

For without confidence, people will not take calculated risks, and they will not wait and be patient for the desired outcome.
And when ideas and results don’t work out, without confidence, some of the richest people around now days could not have come back.

Many people fail to realise that often some of the greatest people in business, have fallen, but then through confidence and motivation, have come back.

Henry ford, went bankrupt because he was too much of a perfectionist…but came back.
Walt Disney studio went bankrupt in 1923.
Milton Hershey failed several times making and selling chocolates until he perfected his milk chocolate.
Heinz and his business were wiped out in 1875, but he came back.
In 2015  H.J. Heinz Company had over $10 billion in revenue.
P.T Barnum was bankrupt in 1855 and owed his creditors nearly half a million dollars.
Barnum didn’t give up and he slowly worked himself out of debt over the next five years.

They could have just given up and quit.

Thats what average people would have done !

“Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” Mark Victor Hansen

“Low self-confidence isn’t a life sentence. Self-confidence can be learned, practiced, and mastered — just like any other skill. Once you master it, everything in your life will change for the better.” ~Barrie Davenport

“The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you.” ~William Jennings Bryan

Now we can cut and paste “cool” quotes about different memes.. the net is full of them.

But at the end of the day, people must exhibit confidence in their actions and actually take action.
For without action, we are just wishful thinkers on a stage and floating along with the tide.

And life pushes us in different directions…rather than us pushing back and shaping our own lives and destiny.
And thats why self confidence without guided motivation is worthless.
Motivation, a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way.

And this comes in two forms as well.

We must be self motivated and desire achievable goals.
But more importantly, we must be motivated to actually take action and start things.
Too many “positive thinkers” now days, are all right with the confidence and the mantras.

But often they fail.

Not because their mindset or attitude or confidence was lacking.

It was because they had the attributes but did not take action.
Without action, we risk nothing, and gain the same.

Too many people, in the small things, and more importantly in the big things put all their energy into what could go wrong.
But the people that move ahead in life, place all their energy and ideas, into what will go right.
From a man that was crippled by Polio, but overcame that minor become President of the United states.

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.
Theodore Roosevelt
